It’s no secret that when you live in Canada, you have access to some of the best wineries around. Now, combine this with an open-air amphitheater, award-winning local wines, a pleasant summer evening with a near full moon AND a couple of Canadian rock bands – then you have the makings of one of the best nights of the summer, even when summer hasn’t officially started!
Last Saturday, we headed to Jackson-Triggs Winery in Niagara-on-the Lake,Ontario for their 2014 Summer Concert Series. The winery has a contemporary feel with its beautiful open-concept passageway, complete with stone fireplace and couches inviting you towards the vineyard. Looking out at the rows of vines, one can’t help but think about all the occasions yet to be celebrated with this year’s vintage.
It was still early, so we decided to relax outside and toast to summer with a glass of Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc. This was a perfect complement to the evening since the excitement was already building in anticipation of headliner, Sam Roberts Band from Montreal, and opening band – Toronto’s own, Jane’s Party.
The amphitheater is located adjacent to the vineyard and very comfortable director-style chairs are available on a general admission seating basis. The stage is intimate and the sound is spectacular.
Before long, we were seated 3rd row center, listening to some rocking tunes. Sam Roberts Band had the crowd singing and dancing to “Shapeshifters“ and “We’re All in this Together“ from their new album – Lo-Fantasy, in addition to classics like “Hard Road,” “Don’t Walk Away Eileen“ and “Brother Down.”
Sam Roberts addressed the cheering crowd and commented on the stellar venue and beautiful summer evening.
Looking around at the setting and sold out crowd of happy faces, it was easy to conclude that we are fortunate here in Canada, not only to have award-winning wineries, but to also have such great Canadian talent. Both bands gave outstanding performances showing how truly passionate they are about their music, thus bringing the crowd to their feet as the moon was rising in the sky. No doubt, hands down, in my humble opinion – this was the night of the summer!
